A small beauty

The picture shows a Lesser White-fronted Goose at the Valdak Marshes in Porsanger. The white blaze and the yellow eye ring are typical features for adult lesser white-fronted geese. The black spots on the belly are also typical, since the pattern varies from individual to individual.

As the name implies, the Lesser White-fronted Goose is a small goose. Adult individuals are only slightly larger than the Mallard.

All this make the Lesser White-fronted Goose a distinctive and beautiful bird.

A pet child has many names. The Lesser White-fronted Goose is in Norway also called "mountain goose" or "Sami goose". The Sami name Giljobaš can be translated as "calf nose goose". This name comes from the white blaze which reminds the white nose of reindeer calves.
