"The secret of the Lesser White-fronted Goose"

Even if the Lesser White-fronted Goose has its threats in Norway, they are not enough the cause the species dramatic decrease. Most pairs produce young, but in defiance of this less and less birds return each year. The most significant threat must be abroad along the migration routes and in the wintering areas.

If we are to secure the existence of the Lesser White-fronted Goose in Norway, management actions needs to be carried out at the sites where the lesser occur during winter time.

In the areas around the Black and the Caspian seas are wintering lessers observed every year. These are enormous areas, where also the "Russian" lesser white-fronted geese are wintering. Until recently only the lessers themselves knew where they spent the winter.

Mapping of the species migration and movements during winter are a prerequisite and the first step in the work to save the species from extinction.
