Nature is the source of culture

The nature influence our way of living is beyond questioning. Patterns of settlements, food traditions, clothing, language, folk belief, art and business life, are all examples of our culture that is largely expressed through our access to natural resources and the environment we live in. In North-Norway several cultures live side by side - the diverse nature has given the basis for the existence of many cultures. The different nature types coast, fjord, mountain plains and river valleys have all their characteristic cultures.

In our modern society we are not so dependent on biological diversity to acquire food, work and place of living as in former times. Even then the nature's effects on culture are evident and large. The nature also shapes our self confidence and identity.

Our natural heritage is therefore equal to our cultural heritage. Protection of nature is protection of culture!
