Exciting plant life

Globeflower

The plant life in North-Norway is very special, and attracts international attention. Most species are here on the edge of their distributional range. Many plants have their most northerly growing sites here, though there are also plants that have their most southerly distribution here. Some species have their main distribution range in the east, in the Siberian taiga. For these plants North-Norway is their western outpost.

The mix of plants from different climatic zones creates a very unusual plant society. Another distinctive stamp of the vegetation in North-Norway is that many plants that in southern areas are considered mountain species here grow down on the shore.

Some few plant species can just be found in a few restricted areas in Norway, and are therefore considered as threatened or vulnerable. Examples are nodding locoweed, Boreal Jacobs-ladder and smooth northern-rockcress.

Wood Cranesbill Large Pink Finnmarkspors

The Nordland County is often referred to as Norway's "orchid county". Many orchid species needs lime rich soil to thrive. This soil is not so common elsewhere in Norway, but can be found in good quantities in Troms and Finnmark counties.
